What it is

Overview

A check engine light can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a misfire that can damage your catalytic converter. We read the codes, then look at freeze frame, live data and readiness to find out why the code set.

Clearing a code without fixing the cause just brings it back. We don't clear codes to pass an inspection.

Compatibility

Vehicles it works with

Gas

Most 1996+ cars and light trucks (OBD-II)

Diesel

Most diesel pickups; many heavy trucks

Some non-engine systems require manufacturer-level access. We'll tell you what we can reach.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you just clear the light?

We can clear codes after a repair, but clearing alone won't fix the problem and resets emissions readiness monitors.

Is a flashing check engine light serious?

Yes. Usually an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Limit driving and get it checked.

Will my car pass inspection?

Readiness monitors must be complete; we'll check their status. Inspection rules vary by state.

Why did the light come back after the parts store cleared it?

The underlying fault is still present.

Can a loose gas cap cause it?

Yes, it can trigger evaporative system codes on many vehicles.
